Forties in Fitzroy

Hat - vintage, skirt - made by me, everything else thrifted

Another one from last weekend - we took our guests on an epic walking tour of the city which ended at the Clear-It outlet in Fitzroy, where I subsequently bought four cardigans.. heh.

I was rather proud of my outfit this day, I wore not one but three items I've never worn before - the vest, the hat and the blazer. The blazer I bought YEARS ago at Savers because it has a cute velvet bow and it's red..  but recently I realised it is (or would be) pretty 1940's looking.. after I removed the GIANT shoulder pads, that is.
The hat is one of two new hat acquisitions from a vintage store down the road from my work. I saw them there when I went wedding dress "shopping" and couldn't stop thinking about them so I went back a week later and they were still there so I bought them.
They're both rather plain but good basic hats that will go with many an outfit!

I felt rather awkward taking these photos (hence the boring, frozen looking poses) as we were down a side street of the very busy and trendy Brunswick St in Fitzroy, and people kept walking past and staring or needing to pass through where I was standing.. I still haven't conquered my fear of taking photos in public places and I'm thinking I may need to force myself into it as the area we are soon to move to has many beautiful tree-lined streets and a river and old houses with lovely gardens spilling out onto the footpath. These things need documenting, you know!

  1. Taking photos in public places is the SCARIEST and probably the worst aspect of blogging...hence why I tend to stick to quiet rural areas where no one is around. I would love to have the courage to venture out and take photos in the city to add a bit of variety to my blog! SO I have a lot of admiration for these gorgeous photos because you look lovely and not at all strained despite how stressful it must have been to take photos there.

    1. Aw, thank you :) I will say it was probably the fastest photo shoot I've ever done because I just wanted to get it over with! You're lucky then that you live in an amazingly beautiful place! The suburb I'm in currently is just not particularly photogenic, so hopefully when I move I can get some photos in places other than my backyard (though it's nice to have that option too!)

    2. I'm jealous that you can take photos in your backyard - I'd love to have that option for when I want to get some outfit photos quickly! Your backyard is the prettiest :)

I love the burgundy color, i love the checkered style of the skirt and its shape. I love also how you manage to mark your waist.

    Great style!

  3. Goodness, what a sharp, chic, timelessly lovely 40s outfit. I adore the colour palette and classic silhouette at work here. You're the picture of style, dear gal!

*PS* You bet, once things have settled down a bit in regards to my top secret vintage plans (which are keeping me feverishly busy at the moment), I can certainly try to share some of the images from my new-to-me 1930s yearbook. Thank you for asking. :)

    1. Haha, thank you, I was just pulling an "I'm just smiling for a photo - nothing weird here" kind of face. I think Eli took about 30 photos and they're all the same because I was too afraid to move ^_^

  8. Hahah, I have a feeling that every time we take photographs people just keep piling up until there's hundreds of them starting at me :D So awkward!
But don't dread your camera shy attitude, because you look as beautiful as ever! *_* It's like I'm watching a scene from Boardwalk Empire!
