Work dress-ups

Blouse - c/o Dangerfield, skirt - made by me, earrings - Lovisa, shoes - Rubi

Here's the full outfit I was wearing in my last post, just something I wore to work the other day. I work in an office with a pretty relaxed dress code - the elusive "business casual" - but I still like to dress up a little. A lot of people in my office will just wear jeans or whatever closest-thing-to-pyjamas pants they can get away with, but I think dressing up for work is a huge mood-booster. I mean, of course I'd prefer to stay home in my pjs all day, but wearing them to my place of employment? Not so much.

One of the best things about dressing in a vintage or retro style is that the styles are (generally) super work appropriate. A 50's style skirt is never going to get you pulled into HR, swing trousers look perfect with cropped blazers or dress up a simpler t-shirt and also, skirt suits.

I know a lot of people worry about looking too "costumey" when wearing authentic vintage to work, but so many modern work-wear styles are based on vintage looks to keep them looking "conservative" that I think it is one environment where you can pretty much get away with it while just looking like you are a bit eccentric. Which is totally not a bad thing at all!

Do you wear vintage to work? Do you play it down or go full on authentic?

  1. Great example of how vintage style can work in a modern setting. I teach at a University and while most teachers wear jeans to class I think it's important to present a more professional look to our students. Most days I wear a suit or maybe something similar to your outfit above. While it's not always vintage persay, I tend to add vintage accessories like a brooch or sometimes even a vintage hat.

    1. Thank you!
That's awesome that you dress up for work too, I definitely think it can give a more professional look as you say (especially as opposed to jeans!!) Vintage accessories are a perfect way to add a little personality to your outfit, I'm very jealous that you can wear hats to work!

  2. Did I mention that you're my spirit animal!???? OMG, I love your new haircut! ^_^ Pixie's are super easy and fun, you don't need to blow dry or comb it, or do anything at all, you wake up in the morning and you already have a punk hairdo! :D The office attire is lovely, you look like a movie star! If I ever found a job with a dress code, it would suck so much!!!

Thanks for the lovely compliments (as always)!!!!
It's sooooooo easy, I can't get over it!
You know, I always thought the same but it's kind of an (almost) fun challenge, and at least I don't have a *shudder* uniform...

  3. What a darling work outfit ~ I think you look super chic and stunning. I don't work in the office (SAHM) but I appreciate 'dressing up' for occasions that people often won't think of doing; such as trips to the grocery store or lunch at the park. It's nice to look nice no matter what you are doing; such a confidence booster I think. ❤

  5. I LOVE this outfit! You look fantastic! This is absolutely something I would wear to work, too. I work in a bank, and so I tend to stick with simple vintage silhouettes and styles. But I always wear something vintage or vintage-inspired. As you said, much of it already lends itself to office-wear (that classic secretary look)!

    Cheers,

  6. I think dressing up for work is important for many reasons. I think it does motivate people to work harder when they reach the perfect balance between comfort and dressiness. Oddly, I don't dress up often for my job. I work at frame shop that has an odd mix of physical work and handywork. I can usually wear a skirt but every so often there is that one day I need to stand on a stool or move a bunch of boxes. Then my workspace is REALLY cold. Since it is winter here, I am usually in jeans, leggings, and sweatshirts. It is pretty sad, but we are relocating soon, so I might be dressing up nicer again. *crosses fingers*

Well, some workplaces just don't allow it, so thats totally fair enough!

  7. You look smashing! I still love the pixie, and that blouse is the perfect vintage piece. I just find the shape of the collar and the slight gathering at the shoulders so flattering and pretty.
I would love to be able to wear vintage for work, but unfortunately I'm stuck in a uniform. As uniforms go, it's not bad, but I'm still looking forward to the day when I'm free of it.

i wear vintage to work. as i work in a office with a lot of contact to politicians and official people i play it down when we have visitors. but i can go full vintage, when there is just my boss and i ... if he is gone, i can even go with a big hairdo and a hat. ;)

I must admit your work outfits are a huuuuuge inspiration for me, I've been looking for some more basic tops and printed full skirts like you wear!

  9. Your outfit looks gorgeous.

I DESPISE business casual and that abomination 'casual Friday'! The things people deem appropriate to wear on a Friday sometimes leave me speechless. Tank tops anyone? Havianas? Too short mini skirts? Ratty t-shirts? Thursday you were in a perfectly acceptable skirt suit and then you degenerate to this? OK rant over now.

I have made a load of work dresses from some vintage patterns that is my workwear. If I have to dress down I wear skirts and crisp business shirts. I would love a wear a pussy-bow blouse but sadly that is not the best look on me :(

I agree!! I see a lot of ladies on my way to work wearing mini skirts with their blazers.. I'm not really sure when that became ok to wear to the office, but each to their own I suppose!

I definitely think I need to make a few more dresses and skirts for every-day office wear, I'll have to put them on my to-do list!
